Get to know me
Alvin Yip is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate at Northwest Relationships, practicing under the supervision of Brittany Thomas, LMFT. He works with individuals, couples, and families, with primary focus on BIPOC clients and a particular interest in grief and loss, anxiety, relationships, self-confidence, intergenerational trauma, the immigrant and first-generation experience, and self-empowerment. His sessions resonate deeply with first-generation college students and immigrant families.
Alvin's approach is systemic, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, collaborative, and person-centered. He draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Experiential Therapy, with additional training in Motivational Interviewing. He believes real change begins with strong rapport and trust, which is what makes the open, vulnerable interactions of therapy possible. Alvin is especially drawn to clients who are passionate about personal growth and improving their relationships with family, friends, and themselves.
Alvin earned his M.A. in Couple and Family Therapy from Pacific Lutheran University and his Bachelor of Applied Science with a specialization in Applied Behavioral Science from Seattle Central College. He has additional training in SpearCare and is an attendee of the Children's Justice Conference. Alvin identifies as an Asian-American cisgender heterosexual male and is fluent in both English and Cantonese, which helps him connect with a diverse client base. He volunteers with the Asian Counseling Referral Service, Operation Sack Lunch, and the Children's Justice Conference. Outside of session, Alvin lifts weights, plays volleyball, takes nature walks, listens to music, and sings, and recently has been exploring the world of essential oils, with a particular fondness for pine needle and eucalyptus.
The comfort zone is a great place to be, but nothing grows there.
