Jay Schmucker is a Marriage and Family Therapy intern at Northwest Relationships, practicing under the supervision of Robin Beckley, LMFT. He works with adults, adolescents, individuals, couples, and families around anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship and couple conflict, family dynamics, life transitions, grief and loss, identity exploration, men's issues, neurodiversity, and personal growth. Jay is especially drawn to clients who are open to reflection, growth, and discovering new perspectives, and who are working through depression, anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence, or couple and family conflict.
Jay's approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and client-centered. He draws from Family Systems Theory, Solution-Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, and has completed Level 1 Gottman Method training including advanced coursework on treating trauma and affairs within relationships. He believes meaningful change happens when people feel safe and supported, and recognizes that there's rarely a single right solution: growth often comes from exploring multiple paths forward. Jay values being challenged by his clients and sees therapy as a space for mutual engagement.
Jay is currently completing his Master's in Couple and Family Therapy at Pacific Lutheran University and holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Washington Tacoma. He is a student member of AAMFT and WAMFT. Jay identifies as a white, cisgender, heterosexual man and brings lived experience navigating neurodiversity, homelessness, chronic illness, and anxiety, which informs the empathy he brings to clients in similar circumstances. He is an active ally to women's rights, LGBTQIA2S+ communities, and racial justice movements. Outside of session, Jay spends time in nature, reads across psychology, spirituality, and history, plays tabletop role-playing games with friends and family, and shares his home with four cats and a 1970s rockstar-inspired toy named Brad, who frequently appears in surprise locations.
Therapy is a space for mutual engagement, learning, and hope.
