Dr. Zain Shamoon is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AAMFT Approved Supervisor at Northwest Relationships. He works via telehealth with individuals, couples, families, children, and adolescents around anxiety, depression, couple communication, relationship trauma, social anxiety, and the complexities of life cycle transitions. Dr. Shamoon has particular interest in supporting individuals navigating life cycle shifts, couples working to repair their relationships, and teens and young adults building greater confidence.
Dr. Shamoon's approach is rooted in the belief that everyone has a story to reclaim. He draws from Narrative Therapy, the Person-of-the-Therapist model, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, providing client-centered care that takes seriously each client's unique sociocultural system. Guided by his mantra that you can't change what you don't confront, he empowers clients to face their challenges directly and to make fundamental changes in their coping patterns and the quality of their relationships.
Dr. Shamoon holds a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies, an M.S. in Couple and Family Therapy, and a B.A. in Psychology, all from Michigan State University. He is a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor through AAMFT, a member of WAMFT and the Institute of Muslim Mental Health, and serves on the advisory board for the AAMFT minority fellowship program. He is also an instructor and trainer for the Person-of-the-Therapist model and a host and co-founder of the Narratives of Pain storytelling project. As a South Asian, Pakistani, Muslim man who speaks some Urdu, Dr. Shamoon brings a distinctive cultural perspective to his practice. Outside of session, he plays piano, watches films, plays basketball, and writes poetry, drawing on his background as a former competitive slam poet and local performing artist.
You can't change what you don't confront.
