Get to Know Ryu

Ryu Hijikata, a dedicated Couple and Family Therapy and Art Therapy intern, weaves his understanding of narrative, solution-focused, and mindfulness techniques into his practice. Currently pursuing his Master's degree in Couple and Family Therapy & Art Therapy at Antioch University Seattle, Ryu has acquired a rich academic background, with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Legal Studies from UC Santa Cruz. His commitment to the profession is further evidenced by his active student membership in the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Ryu's clinical focus encompasses a wide spectrum of areas, such as self-identity exploration, emotion-regulation, life transitions, loss and grief, anxiety, and relationship communication. With his ability to connect with children, teens, couples, families and older adults, Ryu uses his knowledge of various therapeutic modalities to create a personalized and holistic therapeutic environment for each client.

Adopting a client-centered and strength-based approach, Ryu sees his role as empowering his clients to reflect on and rewrite their own narratives. He firmly believes in meeting each individual where they are, tailoring his approach to their unique needs, and providing an environment that emphasizes cultural inclusivity and social justice. In addition, Ryu integrates art therapy in his practice, offering creative arts expression when words fall short.

As a Japanese second-generation immigrant, Ryu brings his cultural experience and personal perspectives to his practice, fostering a deeper understanding of those grappling with their own cultural identities and immigration experiences. His practice also provides an empathetic space for those experiencing systemic oppression and grief.

Away from his professional life, Ryu embraces his artistic side. He expresses his creativity through various mediums like ceramics, wood, stained glass, watercolor, acrylic, and fine ink. He also enjoys working with wool and soft fabrics, tending to indoor plants, and spending time with his dog.

With Ryu Hijikata, you'll find a therapist whose passion for his work extends to creating a therapeutic space where every individual can explore, grow, and feel empowered in their journey towards healing and self-discovery.
